How I Keep a Childlike Perspective About the World
10/23/2026
For the past 4 years, every time I get on a flight, I write about a memory from childhood.
I write for two reasons:
- I'm inspired by the autobiographies of Gandhi and Benjamin Franklin, St. Augustine's Confessions, and other ancient religious texts, and I want to write my own autobiography someday.
- I believe it's essential to keep a childlike wonder for the world around you, and this is one way I keep that light alive.
These writings are now some of my most treasured possessions. Since I don't have kids of my own, they've also helped shape Kale more than almost anything else. I remember unlocking reading in first grade and the pride of showing a teacher or my parents that I'd finished a book. I remember racing my classmates in third grade to finish multiplication worksheets as fast as I could. I remember how awesome four square was, and riding around the block 7 times the first day I could ride a bike on my own.
Not everything was rainbows and butterflies. With 6 brothers in the house, my dad forgot to teach me how to ride a bike. He only remembered when it was time to teach my younger brother.
Every kid has their own identity-shaping experiences. With Kale, we hope to create more positive ones.
